What is a domain name #

I want to believe you already know what a website is by now.   Great!  you should also know that for your website to be reached on the internet it needs an address just like your house or office needs an address for  friends or clients to be able to locate you, your website address is your domain name.   A domain name is used for finding and identifying computers on the Internet. Computers use Internet Protocols (IP) addresses, The Internet Protocol (IP) is the principal communications protocol in the Internet protocol suite for relaying data-grams across network boundaries, its routing function enables inter networking, and essentially establishes the Internet, because it’s very challenging for humans to remember strings of numbers, domain names were developed and used to identify entities on the Internet rather than using Internet Protocol addresses.
A domain name can be any combination of letters and numbers, and it can be used in combination of the various domain name extensions, such as .com, .net and more.
The domain name must be registered before you can use it. Every domain name is unique.   No two websites can have the same domain name.
If someone types in www.yourdomain.com, it will go to your website and no one else’s. Meanwhile domain names are to be renewed every year.
